The goal of the Camp Fire Fund Conservation Program at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) is to prepare future conservation leaders and ensure wise stewardship and application of the best available science to wildlife management.

The Camp Fire Fund Endowed Program at SUNY-ESF strives to:

• Lead an applied research program that trains graduate students and postdoctoral scholars (Camp Fire Conservation Fellows) in applied conservation and policy.

• Produce and provide research and teaching on pressing conservation issues that inform wildlife policy and management, with an emphasis on big game.

The funding for the endowment originates from the Camp Fire Conservation Fund, the nonprofit arm of the Camp Fire Club of America.

The Club was founded in 1897 and has a long legacy of conservation work including bison recovery, federal game protection laws and the creation of national parks and forest preserves.

The Fund was founded in 1977 to “fund scientific research and education in support of sound wildlife and habitat management".

Both have a long-standing partnership with SUNY-ESF in forest and wildlife research and conservation training.

Dr. Joshua Millspaugh, a SUNY-ESF alumnus, was named to the professorship in October 2023, coming from the Boone and Crockett Professorship at the University of Montana.
