Marco Salvo

Marco is from New York City and earned his B.S. in Wildlife Biology at the University of Montana. His research for his M.S. at the University of Montana explored the use of bird-dedicated radar systems to help inform and reduce bird strikes at Ellsworth and Offutt Air Force Bases. The systems were utilized to display bird flight tracks and map out bird routes. Marco and his team worked on identifying the birds within the monitored flight tracks and training a machine learning model to determine more information about the birds - such as number, size, and species - from radar data.
Prior Role
M.S. Student, Wildlife Biology, University of Montana
Project
Use of Radar to Monitor Bird use of Air Fields at U.S. Air Force Bases in the Midwest
Completion Date
December 2025
Education
B.S. - Wildlife Biology - University of Montana
Supported By:
- US Air Force
Research Interests
Marco aims to begin his Ph.D. studies in January of 2027, and wants to pursue a career in academia and applied management. Applied management looks at conservation problems important to natural resource managers and answers questions they can act on. Large-scale anthropogenic changes on the landscape have made it so wildlife and humans impact one another constantly, so finding those answers is incredibly important.
